Paul Lewing has been working with clay and glazes since 1965, and is well known in the Northwest for his unique and painterly style of working with ceramic glazes. He is one of a growing number of ceramists who have successfully made the switch from high-temperature reduction gas firing to mid-range oxidation electric firing.

"I have been in all 50 states, most of them more than once; my goal now is to teach in all 50. I'm up to 31 now and have numbers 32 and (maybe) 33 scheduled."
Maximum Enrollment: 50 Cost: $300 plus expenses
This one-day (approximately 6 hours) lecture will explore ceramic glazes, their constituent materials and oxides, and their behavior during firing. We will begin with a review of the properties of glaze materials, and move on to a discussion of the method of empirical formula calculation. We will discuss color response in glazes, surface characteristics, and the effect of reduction/oxidation of glazes. Particular emphasis will be put on Cone 10 reduction and Cone 5-6 oxidation, the two most prevalent firing temperatures and atmospheres.
Ideally, we would have access to a Macintosh computer with large or multiple monitors, to demonstrate INSIGHT, Hyperglaze (and Matrix soon). These are glaze calculation software products. They are an increasingly popular and prevalent tool in understanding glaze chemistry and aid the potter greatly in adjusting firing temperature, surface characteristics, and the fit of glaze to clay body, and provide useful information on opacity and color development.
Handouts will be provided with Cone 10 and Cone 5 glaze recipes, and information about glaze materials, oxides, and firing. The workshop will conclude with a slide show of Paul's work in pottery and tile.
Tile-Making, Tile-Painting, Tile-Marketing
This is a two-day (about six hours a day) lecture/discussion type of workshop. It begins with demonstration of forming tiles and trimming by rolling, extruding and pressing. Plans for a homemade slab roller and tile press will be distributed, along with cone 10 and cone 5 glazes. A discussion of mortars, grouts, installation techniques, and tile industry terminology follows. Then we move on to marketing, especially as it applies to the special problems of commissioned work. We discuss dealing with architects, designers, and trade showrooms, and selling at wholesale, retail, and trade shows. Special emphasis is put on booth design, portfolio development, promotional literature (of which I show many examples) and selling techniques. The second day is devoted to decorating techniques, starting with glazing bisqued tiles in my own painterly manner, by trailing, spraying, pouring, sponging, and brushing glazes. I focus on cone 5 oxidation, but these methods are applicable to any temperature. After this we move on to sume painting on clay and paper, which can be hands-on if time and space allow, and viewing of my video on sume painting. Then a discussion of applying water-based china paints to tile, and description of the Hunt-Speedball method of making silk-screens and printing on tile. We conclude with slides of my work, as well as historical and contemporary architectural ceramics, particularly work by Northwest clay artists.
