Library: Multi-Layer Glazing

This technique is normally employed to achieve variegation. Typically an opacified glaze having a stiffer melt is applied over a more fluid glaze. During firing they intermingle and the upper glaze tends to pull into islands exposing the lower one. Of course, there are technical challenges to overcome. If the combined layer is too thick it will run. If the lower layer does not have good adhesion to the body it will pull away when the second layer is drying and shrinking.
